Punakha

Punakha is one of Bhutan's most historically and culturally significant destinations, and also the old capital of Bhutan. It’s located in a warmer, lower-altitude valley than Thimphu, Punakha is known for its magnificent Punakha dzong (Fort), fertile rice fields, rivers, monasteries and beautiful Himalayan landscapes. Punakha offers a different experience from Thimphu, Phobjikha and Paro. While Punakha combines Royal history, sacred Buddhist sites, fertile countryside and dramatic river Puna Chu landscapes.

Major tourist attractions

Punakha Dzong (Fort)

The main attraction of the valley is Punakha Dzong, which stands dramatically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The dzong is renowned for its architecture, sacred relics and historical importance which you will see during your Bhutan Tour.

Punakha Suspension Bridge

Punakha has Bhutan's longest traditional suspension bridges crosses the Pho Chhu River next to Punakha Dzong. Decorated with colorful prayer flags, it offers beautiful views of the river and surrounding valley and walking across it is a popular experience for Tourist.

Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility)

The small village called Sopsokha, where Chimi Lhakhang is associated with Master Drukpa Kunley, popularly known as the "Divine Madman." The temple is traditionally famous with fertility blessings and is reached by a pleasant walk through rice fields and village scenery during your Bhutan Tour and Travel.

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

This beautiful stupa sits on a hill above the Mo Chhu Valley overlooking beautiful valley of Punakha to reach it involves a hiking through farmland and pine forest, followed by panoramic views of the valley as you keep ascend.

Bhutan River Rafting in Punakha

The only river rafting adventure that tourist can experience with one of the most exciting outdoor activities in Punakha, combining adventure with spectacular views of Bhutan's mountains, forests and traditional villages. Rafting is mainly done on the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers, which meet below Punakha Dzong.

The Mo Chhu (Mother River) is more accessible option for recreational river rafting. The river has stretches of rapids as well as calmer sections, making it suitable for tourist experience river adventure without extremely technical support.

The Pho Chhu (Father River) has stronger and more challenging rapids compare to Mo Chhu. It is particularly attractive for tourist looking for a more adventurous whitewater experience and experience more strong water current.
