This is the itinerary we recommend most often to guests who want to see the classic western circuit properly, rather than rush it. Two nights each in Thimphu and Punakha give the trip room to breathe, and every stay is chosen for its setting as much as its comfort — a riverside lodge in Punakha, a quiet hillside address in Thimphu.
A private guide and vehicle travel with you throughout, and the pace is set by you: an extra hour at a temple, a detour for a photograph, a lunch that runs long.

A traditional khata welcome on arrival at Paro, then the drive to Thimphu with your private guide. Settle into your hotel and spend the evening at leisure, or join a short orientation walk through the capital with your guide.

A full day in the capital: the Buddha Dordenma statue, Tashichho Dzong, the takin sanctuary and the National Memorial Chorten. Time is set aside for the weekend market and the textile and craft boutiques on Norzin Lane.

Leave Thimphu after breakfast and climb to Dochula Pass, where 108 memorial chortens stand against a wall of Himalayan peaks on a clear day. A coffee stop here is one of the best photo opportunities of the trip.
Descend into the warmer Punakha valley and check in to a boutique lodge on the riverbank in the afternoon, with the evening free to enjoy the setting.

Visit Punakha Dzong, set at the confluence of two rivers and among the most beautiful fortresses in the kingdom, then cross the valley's longest suspension bridge on foot. A short walk through rice terraces leads to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman.
Lunch is a private chef's tasting menu on a farmhouse terrace overlooking the valley, and the day closes with a traditional hot-stone bath back at your lodge.

Drive back to Paro and, if energy allows, set out that afternoon on the trail to Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery — or rest and save the hike for the following morning, whichever your pace prefers. Evening at leisure, with a farewell dinner arranged at your hotel.
