Bumthang is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, home to some of its oldest temples, and this itinerary is built to give it the time it deserves rather than treat it as an add-on. After the western circuit, the road climbs over Pele La into central Bhutan, past Trongsa's clifftop dzong and into the four valleys of Bumthang.
Where the standard route retraces its steps by road, this journey returns to Paro on the short scenic domestic flight over the central mountains — a comfortable, memorable way to close the loop.

A stop at Dochula Pass for its 108 chortens and Himalayan views, then down into the Punakha valley to visit Punakha Dzong and the suspension bridge across the Po Chhu river.

A scenic drive over the Pele La pass into central Bhutan, breaking at Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral seat of the royal family, spread along its ridge above a deep gorge. Continue on to the Bumthang valley, checking in to a boutique lodge by evening.

Visit Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang, among the oldest and most revered temples in the kingdom, followed by a private visit to a local weaving or paper-making workshop.
In the afternoon, a tasting of Bumthang's own cheese, honey and apple produce, arranged with a local farming family.

A relaxed morning in Bumthang — a walk through Ogyen Choling or simply time at your lodge — before the short scenic domestic flight back to Paro over the central Himalayan foothills, a striking way to close the loop without retracing the road.

The pilgrimage climb to Taktsang monastery, set into a cliff face above the Paro valley, taken at an easy pace with your private guide. In the afternoon, visit Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum, and close the trip with a farewell dinner and a short cultural performance.
