Punakha Dzong at the river confluence, the valley's longest suspension bridge, and Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman, reached on foot through rice terraces. A private chef's lunch is arranged on a farmhouse terrace overlooking the valley.

Drive to the wide glacial bowl of Phobjikha, winter home to the endangered black-necked crane. Visit Gangtey Monastery, perched above the valley floor, and take an easy walk along the valley's nature trail.

Cross the Pele La pass into central Bhutan, stopping at Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral seat of the royal family, before continuing into the Bumthang valley.
